Having grown up in the art world in Manhattan, I happen to know a thing or two about art. That said, the old adage, 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' holds true no matter what you're looking at. I'm instinctually drawn to certain images and colors. I think we all are. While I've always adored the Impressionists, I certainly have noticed my preferences and appreciation for certain styles changing over the years. I'm pulled to certain artists and works of art. It's not complicated, I tell people, you like it or you don't. You can go to Christies, Sotheby's, any gallery in SoHo and purchase a drawing, lithograph or painting as an investment. Or you can purchase something simply because you're drawn to it. In my humble opinion, the latter is the way to go. When purchasing something you love, there is no wrong or right.

About a year ago my client, Pearl at Longshore, an upscale Westport, Connecticut restaurant located on the beautiful shores of the Long Island Sound, decided to make use of its large, airy lobby to showcase local artists and their works. Each piece is for sale, and every 2 months or so, a new artist is selected to showcase his or her work. Before I even met Yvonne, before I had the opportunity to see her pieces in person, I was immediately captivated by the bright, bold abstract images. They spoke to me. They pulled me in the way Matisse, Cézanne, Monet and Degas had when I was a child. Knowing I was going to start featuring local artists on this website, I knew instantly that I would begin with Yvonne.

The way in which Yvonne Claveloux merges vibrant colors and organic shapes creates a sense of energy and movement in her work. Through her uninhibited brush stroke, she embraces the beauty in imperfection as loose lines, drips and smudges converge together creating a sense of musical and often dramatic harmony.

Her instinctive style guide her to new and unexpected adventures when she steps into the studio. Always unplanned from the onset, she allows herself to follow her own impulses. Through the use of diverse mediums including chalk, acrylics, watercolors and gesso, each piece develops its own personality.

“Inspiration for my art derives from my travels, Cuban roots and colorful winters in Miami. I use paint as a way to express emotions that cannot be verbalized and strive to celebrate beauty, flaws and all,” Yvonne shares.

Her passion for art was sparked as a student in Milan where she studied fashion design. In the years that followed her creative journey has taken many forms, rom running her own successful interior design firm, to working as Head Stylist for atHome Magazine, her artistic eye has continued to evolve as she encounters new opportunities and explores the world around her.

Yvonne's sense of style and space from her career as a designer parlay perfectly to her art. Each piece is created with wall space in mind, both large and small. Her "shelfies" fill smaller spaces, and add the perfect finishing touch to any book shelf, giving it a well styled look. From black, whites, and greys, subdued pastels, to bright vivid colors, Yvonne's pieces fit well in a wide variety of spaces, in all styles - from classic to contemporary, urban to coastal.

Claveloux divides her time between Westport, CT and Miami, FL.
